Question (e)
What does Yoga represent in Indian philosophical tradition? Is it the same as that practised by the masses in the present day?
Answer
In Indian philosophical tradition, Yoga represents a comprehensive system aimed at achieving spiritual liberation (moksha) through discipline of the body, mind, and soul. Rooted in ancient texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Yoga emphasizes the control of mental modifications (chitta vritti nirodha) and the realization of the true self. It involves an eightfold path (Ashtanga Yoga), including ethical conduct, physical postures, breath control, concentration, and meditation.
However, the practice of Yoga among the masses today is largely different. Modern Yoga is often limited to physical exercises (asanas) and breathing techniques, primarily aimed at improving physical fitness, reducing stress, and enhancing well-being. While these aspects are beneficial, they represent only a small part of the original philosophical depth of Yoga.
Thus, traditional Yoga is a holistic spiritual discipline, whereas contemporary practice is more focused on health and lifestyle.
