🎯 What are the Main Types of Sampling Methods?

🎯 What are the Main Types of Sampling Methods?

Answer: Sampling methods are broadly classified into two categories:

A. Probability Sampling (each unit has a known chance of selection):

  1. Simple Random Sampling (SRS) – every unit has equal chance.

  2. Systematic Sampling – every kᵗʰ unit is selected after a random start.

  3. Stratified Sampling – population divided into strata; random sample from each.

  4. Cluster / Multistage Sampling – groups or clusters are randomly selected, then units within them.

B. Non-Probability Sampling (selection based on judgment or convenience):

  1. Convenience Sampling – easy-to-reach units selected.

  2. Judgment / Purposive Sampling – based on investigator’s opinion.

  3. Quota Sampling – sample drawn to match certain characteristics.

  4. Snowball Sampling – existing subjects recruit future subjects (common in hidden populations).

Follow-up: Classify them based on probability and non-probability sampling:Probability Sampling = SRS, Systematic, Stratified, Cluster→ Non-Probability Sampling = Convenience, Purposive, Quota, Snowball
