Answer :

The Revolt of 1857 witnessed the participation of several prominent leaders, including Bahadur Shah Zafar, Rani Lakshmibai, Nana Sahib, Tatya Tope, Begum Hazrat Mahal, and Kunwar Singh. Among them, the contributions of the following three leaders were particularly significant.

Bahadur Shah Zafar

The last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, was proclaimed the symbolic leader of the revolt by the rebels in Delhi. Although he lacked military power, his leadership provided legitimacy and unity to the movement. Delhi became an important centre of resistance under his nominal authority.

Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi

Rani Lakshmibai emerged as one of the most courageous leaders of the revolt. Opposing the British annexation of Jhansi under the Doctrine of Lapse, she organized armed resistance and fought valiantly against British forces. Her bravery and sacrifice made her a symbol of patriotism and resistance.

Nana Sahib

Nana Sahib, the adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao II, led the uprising in Kanpur. He opposed British policies that denied him pension rights and became a prominent leader of the rebellion in northern India. Under his leadership, Kanpur became one of the major centres of the revolt.

Significance of Their Leadership

These leaders inspired people to challenge colonial rule, mobilized local support, and transformed the revolt into a wider anti-British movement.

Conclusion

The Revolt of 1857 drew strength from the leadership of several courageous individuals. Bahadur Shah Zafar, Rani Lakshmibai, and Nana Sahib played vital roles in organizing resistance and inspiring nationalist sentiments that later influenced India's freedom struggle.
