ISS Previous Year Paper 2021 GS Solution Question

Q.1(c) Trace the evolution of Temple Architecture in South India.

Answer :

The evolution of South Indian temple architecture occurred gradually under different dynasties and reached its peak during the medieval period.

Pallava Period (6th–9th Century CE)

The Pallavas laid the foundation of Dravidian architecture. Early temples were rock-cut structures such as those at Mahabalipuram. Later, structural temples emerged, including the Shore Temple and Kailasanatha Temple at Kanchipuram.

Chola Period (9th–13th Century CE)

The Cholas further developed temple architecture by constructing large stone temples with towering Vimanas. The Brihadeshwara Temple at Thanjavur, built by Rajaraja I, is a masterpiece of Chola architecture. Temples became important religious, cultural, and economic centers.

Pandya Period

The Pandyas contributed to the development of temple complexes and introduced elaborate entrance gateways. Sculptural decoration became increasingly sophisticated.

Vijayanagara Period (14th–17th Century CE)

The Vijayanagara rulers expanded temple complexes and emphasized grand Gopurams (gateway towers). Temples such as those at Hampi display magnificent pillared halls, mandapas, and intricate carvings.

Nayaka Period

The Nayakas further enlarged temple complexes and constructed massive gopurams, as seen in the Meenakshi Temple at Madurai. Decorative elements and temple corridors became more elaborate.

Throughout its evolution, South Indian temple architecture reflected religious devotion, artistic excellence, and political patronage.

Conclusion

South Indian temple architecture evolved from simple rock-cut shrines to vast temple complexes adorned with monumental towers and exquisite sculptures. The contributions of the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara rulers, and Nayakas collectively shaped the rich Dravidian architectural tradition.
