ISS Previous Year Paper 2021 GS Solution Question

Q.1(a) Describe the economic conditions of the Later Vedic Period. How was it different from Rig Vedic life?

Answer :

The economy of the Later Vedic Period was primarily based on agriculture, which became the chief occupation of the people. The use of iron tools improved agricultural productivity and enabled the clearing of forests for cultivation. Crops such as rice, wheat, barley, and pulses were widely cultivated.

Animal husbandry continued to be important, but its relative importance declined compared to agriculture. Land ownership and agricultural surplus became significant features of economic life.

The period also witnessed the growth of trade and commerce. Merchants and traders emerged as important social groups, and barter remained the dominant mode of exchange. Various crafts such as pottery, weaving, carpentry, and metalwork developed considerably.

Differences from Rig Vedic Life

  • The Rig Vedic economy was mainly pastoral, whereas the Later Vedic economy was predominantly agricultural.

  • In the Rig Vedic period, wealth was measured largely in terms of cattle; in the Later Vedic period, land and agricultural produce gained importance.

  • Trade and specialized occupations expanded significantly during the Later Vedic age.

  • Settled villages and permanent agriculture replaced the semi-nomadic lifestyle of the Rig Vedic people.

  • Social and economic stratification became more pronounced in the Later Vedic period.

These developments laid the foundation for urbanization and state formation in ancient India.

Conclusion

The Later Vedic economy marked a transition from a pastoral society to an agrarian and more diversified economic system. Agricultural expansion, growth of trade, and specialization of occupations distinguished it from the simpler economic structure of the Rig Vedic period.
