ISS Previous Year Paper 2018 GS Solution Question

Q.1(e) Was ‘Rama Setu’ a man-made or nature-made monument? Explain with reference to the recent researches and findings of the various commissions.

Answer :

Rama Setu occupies an important place in Indian cultural and religious traditions. According to the Ramayana, it was constructed by Lord Rama's army to reach Lanka. However, the question of whether it is man-made or natural has been the subject of scientific and political debate.

Several geological and oceanographic studies have examined the structure. Research conducted by organizations such as the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and other expert committees has generally suggested that Rama Setu is a natural formation consisting of sandbanks, coral reefs, and limestone shoals formed through geological and marine processes over thousands of years.

Satellite imagery from agencies such as NASA has provided detailed visual evidence of the structure. However, scientific agencies have clarified that satellite images alone cannot establish whether the formation is man-made or natural.

Committees examining the proposed Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project largely concluded that there was insufficient scientific evidence to classify Rama Setu as a man-made structure. Nevertheless, due to its cultural, religious, and historical significance, many groups have advocated its preservation.

Thus, while scientific studies generally support the view that Rama Setu is a natural geological formation, the issue continues to hold cultural and religious importance for millions of people.

Conclusion

The available scientific evidence largely indicates that Rama Setu is a natural formation created through geological processes. However, its deep cultural and religious significance ensures that it remains an important subject of public interest and heritage conservation.
