The integration of princely states into the Indian Union was one of the most significant achievements of independent India. At the time of independence, there were approximately 565 princely states varying in size, population, and administrative capacity.

The task of integration was primarily led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister, and V.P. Menon, Secretary of the States Department. They persuaded the rulers of princely states to sign the Instrument of Accession, through which the states agreed to join India in matters relating to defence, external affairs, and communications.

Most princely states voluntarily acceded to India. However, some states such as Junagadh, Hyderabad, and Jammu & Kashmir posed significant challenges. Junagadh was integrated after a plebiscite, Hyderabad was incorporated through Operation Polo (1948), and Jammu & Kashmir acceded to India under special circumstances following external aggression.
