ISS Previous Year Paper 2016 GS Question 1(d) Solution
Q. 1(d) Why were a number of European companies attracted to India during the 16th–17th centuries?
Answer :
During the 16th and 17th centuries, India was one of the world's richest trading centers and attracted several European trading companies, including the Portuguese, Dutch, English, French, and Danish.
One of the primary reasons for their arrival was India's abundance of highly demanded goods such as spices, cotton textiles, silk, indigo, saltpetre, and precious stones. These products fetched high profits in European markets.
Another important factor was the search for direct sea routes to Asia. The traditional overland trade routes were controlled by Arab and Ottoman merchants, making trade expensive for Europeans. The discovery of sea routes by explorers such as Vasco da Gama enabled direct trade with India.
India also possessed well-developed handicraft industries, prosperous ports, and a large consumer market. Its strategic location in the Indian Ocean further enhanced its commercial importance.
Initially, European companies came for trade, but competition among them gradually led to political involvement and territorial expansion, eventually paving the way for colonial rule in India.
Conclusion
The wealth, resources, strategic location, and flourishing trade network of India made it a highly attractive destination for European trading companies. What began as commercial activity later transformed into political domination and colonial expansion.
